You all know that 4 weeks ago we were wearing our parkas, right? But the good thing about time is that you can’t stop it, and eventually summer will come whether you’re a Stark or not. But you know it’s definitely spring when you see the latest Environmental Working Group’s Annual Guide to Sunscreens. As always, the EWG helps us cut through the overwhelming amounts of misinformation out there (no, coconut oil is not a safe alternative to sunscreen, thanks) and ranks sunscreen safety based on their ingredients. Are they made with good, organic, non-harmful ingredients, or are they basically a cancer-causing petrochemical apocalypse in a bottle?
Here’s a few ecochick favourites that once again made the tops list:
The Honest Company Honest Sunscreen Lotion is in regular rotation around here. Good news is the sunscreen was reformulated for 2015 and I understand it’s much smoother than last year’s version – can’t wait to try it.
CyberDERM Simply Zinc Sun Whip - tried this at Terra20 one day and loved it. It’s super smooth with a really lovely finish. I was put off by the price tag, and I’ve regretted not buying it ever since. Make not my mistakes. (And they’re Canadian!)
Alba Botanica Very Emollient Mineral Sunscreen, Kids. My kid loves this stuff. It goes on easily and it lasts.
Looking for something specific? EWG has ranked the best beach and sport sunscreens, best moisturizers with SPF, and even the best lip balms with SPF (score!) They’ve also listed the hall of shame – the worst sunscreens for your health and ones you should most definitely avoid.
There are loads more on the website – download their handy app (available for Android or Apple) to ensure you make the right decisions while sunscreen shopping. Do you have a favourite safe sunscreen? Share in the comments!
