Sometimes the universe sends you messages of synergy. Have you ever had that happen? You keep running in to the same person, over and over and over. Or you are doing something in one part of your life and something curiously pops up from another part. I see these patterns as little messages from the universe, little favours to say “pay attention”.
This past weekend I visited with dear friends and blogging dynamos at Mom 2.0 Summit in Atlanta, and at that (wonderful, soul-uplifting, madly amusing) conference I received a very useful bag of products from a company called Honest.com. I’ve had a post about Honest.com in the hopper for a while now, and I’d never quite managed to get it done. But now feels like the right time, because it’s spring and because in spite of myself I have found these products to be really lovely. (More on that later.)
Honest.com is a US-based company started by Jessica Alba and her business partner Christopher Galvigan, in pursuit of finding lower impact everyday products. They avoid all the big nasties like parabens and triclosans and more, and they are committed to reducing the use of virgin packaging, instead working towards use and research into recycled and recyclable packaging.
The model for Honest.com is simple: You sign up for an account and then have the option of choosing a “bundle” – Diapers and Wipes, Health and Wellness or “Essentials”, which pretty much covers everything else. The bundles come at a set price, but you’re able to swap out the products within that bundle to tailor it to exactly what you need at that time. The bundles will ship automatically unless you tell it not to, so if you get the email letting you know your bundle will ship shortly and you don’t need anything, you can log in and set the date for a few months away or whenever you think you will need more product.
The products range from a lovely and simple range of bath and body products like hand soap, bubble bath and shampoo, to household cleaning, to baby needs and even more. The packaging is bright and delightful (and recyclable!) and having it show up on my doorstep makes life a lot easier a lot of the time. My current favourite is the Lemongrass Hand Soap, which has a nice and bright scent and no phalates, triclosan or other horrors.
The ease of online shopping is traded off slightly for us Canadians by a 25% surcharge on top of your subtotal on the Honest.com site. (Which is where the “in spite of myself” part comes in). This surcharge covers the extra shipping costs and other fun things, so it’s less of a great deal for us up here. And while I’m kvetching, I also wasn’t crazy about the “automatic shipping” part. This seemed like overkill, like I would end up forgetting a shipment was coming and end up with product I did not, in fact, need. This has, happily, not turned out to be an issue: you get a warning email about a week before any shipment goes, so you can edit the contents and even put it off for months if you want to. You can truly tailor it to your own needs, which is perfect.
So here’s the super fun part. You don’t actually have to take my word on the awesomeness of all this. You can sign up for a free trial of Honest.com products (see the pic just here – that’s my Essentials starter kit!) and try them for yourself. Just head over to Honest.com and sign up for an account, then select the free trial bundle you’re most interested in. Try it out for yourself and see if the products work for you – and let us know what you think!
