Booze to save the planet

ecochick needs a drink.

So it’s a good thing that a quick search for “organic” on the LCBO comes up with about 50 hits. Mostly red and white wines with perhaps a vodka or two thrown in for good measure, the variety and quality of organic alcohol is increasing, and it’s a good thing, given the week ecochick’s had.

One great wine on the list is from Napa Valley’s Frog’s Leap Winery. If you’ve ever toured the Napa Valley wine country and visited Frog’s Leap, you’ll know it’s in a beautiful setting with the tall, sun-baked hills nestled in behind their cavernous stone winery. And now, all of their wines are grown organically, their winery is 100% solar powered (I guess you can do that in California!), they use geothermal energy for heating and cooling, and they “dry farm” the grapes by planting them so deeply they don’t require extra watering.

Their wines aren’t cheap, ranging from $26 for a 2006 Sauvignon Blanc to $100+ for a rich Rutherford. However, if you’re in the mood to splurge, you will not be disappointed – their wines are lovely.

On the less expensive but still yummy side, there’s always Ciao! Organic Wines, available at the LCBO in a Chardonnay and Sangiovese in the $13 range. Far easier on the pocketbook, and the tetrapak is easy on the planet.
